WINTER 2005/2006 – In only a couple of years Winter Park’s terrain park system has been listed in two nationally recognized ski and snowboard publications as a top ten terrain park. Also nationally recognized for having one of the best superpipes in the nation, this season continues to push the envelope for emerging skiers and riders through its progressive design and new access-only area, Dark Territory.
Rail Yard, Winter Park’s innovative advanced terrain park currently features duplicate rails of famous Colorado landmarks, huge hits and one of the largest superpipes in Colorado. Dark Territory, a controlled access section of Rail Yard will feature the biggest and best features of all three terrain parks while increasing awareness of safety and etiquette by requiring skiers and riders to take the extra step in freeriding awareness.
An ideal area for filming and photography, Dark Territory’s fenced in freeriding playground will continue to push Winter Park’s emerging amateur riders to the next level. To ensure their safety, as well as the safety of others, Dark Territory will mimic the rules and regulations posed by the original railroad system.
As history reveals, the term “Dark Territory” comes from an area along the Railroad System in which traffic was controlled by verbal or written authority. In these areas, engineers depended on those engineers that came before them, staking their lives on the discipline necessary to keep the area safe.
Like the Dark Territories scattered along the rail system, Winter Park’s Dark Territory terrain section is also ruled by strict guidelines, etiquette and honor. To enjoy this area, freeriders are expected to take additional steps to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
To obtain access to the Rail Yard’s Dark Territory, skiers and riders ages 10 and older will be asked to attend a safety orientation at any one of Winter Park’s early season freeride events, or offered daily at the Showcase Snowboard in Winter Park Resort. Additional requirements include signing a Dark Territory liability form as well as obtaining a Dark Territory Pass for $20 valid for the entire season. Benefits to freeriders who obtain this exclusive pass include discounts at Winter Park’s Starbucks and Showcase Snowboard Shop.
