The Winter Park Resort Ski & Ride School currently offer a First Tracks Private Lesson for blue terrain skiers and riders, and advertise with the message: “Get on the mountain first. Rip through fresh powder and make first tracks in this private lesson designed to provide special moments on the mountain while improving your skiing and riding without the crowds”.
Starting at 8:00am, one full hour before the midweek opening time of 9:00am, the cost ranges from $99.00 to $125.00 (depending on time of season) for a 1½ hour lesson. Now I don’t mind one little bit if there are people out there willing to pay this to get 3-4 runs in before me while I wait patiently in line with the rest of the local population on big powder days. The reason for this, is that the best powder will be on the black and double-black diamond trails and in the trees, whereas most if not all of the blue trails – because they are intermediate – would have been groomed during the night. The amount of “freshies” might add up to 2-3 inches.
If the Resort were to offer a First Tracks Unlimited Terrain deal, that might make more sense, but then you’ll probably have a revolt on your hands in the lift line and a lot of bad PR with Winter Park regulars – locals, Front Range and destination skiers alike. So, it’s fine like it is!
