An Annual event in Winter Park that is not officially recognized as an “Event” (by the Chamber as an example), but nevertheless brings in thousands of teenagers every year, is the Winter Park Ski Music Festival.
Now in its 20th year, these young musicians – affectionately known as the “band kids” descend upon Winter Park at the tail-end of the season to play music in an organized competition, and of course ski and snowboard in traditionally fantastic spring skiing conditions.
Held over two separate weekends – April 3-6 and 10-13, bands, orchestras & auxiliaries perform at Middle Park High School auditorium in Granby, while choral ensembles perform in a ballroom setting at the Inn at SilverCreek. A professional recording of each performance is provided. Written and taped comments will be provided by experienced and qualified adjudicators.
Trophies will be awarded to all performing groups including Runner Up & Best in Class, Grand Champion Band, Orchestra, Choir, Show/Jazz Choir & Instrumental Jazz.
Both the choral and instrumental performance sites will feature sound shells, PA system, grand piano and standard percussion equipment.
The Awards Ceremony and Street Dance is the climax of the stay in Winter Park. The Street Party that includes a DJ, light show and hot chocolate and is held in Cooper Creek Square, downtown Winter Park.
This is great business for Winter Park for many reasons. The town is filled by a vibrant, energetic and very talented youth-set, and usually at a time when the vast majority of beds are empty. Fostering a positive environment for the adult skiers of the future is always a sound investment, and word of mouth publicity is priceless. Long may this event continue.
