October on the Julian and Gregorian Calendars is the tenth month and only the eighth month in the old Roman calendar. October retained its name from the Latin octō meaning “eight” after January and February were inserted into the calendar that had originally been created by the Romans. This month is commonly associated with the season of autumn north of the equator and spring south of it. The most traditional “holiday” or celebration of the month is Halloween. Birthstones for October are tourmaline and opal and zodiac signs are Libra and Scorpio.
Fun sports trivia in month of October: This is the only time of the year during in America all of the pro teams are playing at the same time – the NBA starts its preseason for about two weeks, then starts the regular season. The NHL is about one month into its regular season; although this year it will be starting a bit later due to the World Cup of Hockey in Toronto. The postseason for MLB has the 1 game wild card game for teams to get into the playoffs for each division followed by the League Championship Series and World Series.
